A graduate of the General Medicine program, a surgeon, and a postgraduate student in the Department of Hospital Surgery at the N.V. Sklifosovsky Institute of Cardiology and Microbiology, I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation (Sechenov University).
A student's journey away from home is always more than just studying. It's a story of growing up, choosing, and transforming.
When I arrived in Russia, it wasn't just a new place for me; it was a challenge! A different language, a different culture, a different pace of living. But it was here, in Tambov, that my true development began, not only as a doctor but also as a person.
I learned, made mistakes, and tried again. I spent long hours studying, working shifts, and helping even during the pandemic.
Tambov became my second home. Here I met people who not only taught me but believed in me, guided me, and supported me. It was here that I understood the meaning of the "Russian Soul" and where it lies: in simple actions, sincere help, and human warmth.
Today, I am a surgeon and am continuing my scientific career, working on my PhD dissertation. But everything I have become began here, within the walls of G.R. Derzhavin Tambov State University.
I don't regret my choice. This path hasn't been easy, but it has made me stronger.
Life is not a sprint, but a marathon. Appreciate every step and let it go!

"My name is Thomas. I’m from Angola. In 2015, I came to Tambov and enrolled in the preparatory faculty at Derzhavin University. I began studying Russian seriously.
Good knowledge of Russian helped me receive medical education in Russian as the language of instruction at the Medical Institute of Derzhavin University, majoring in General Medicine.
Then I continued my training in residency in Saint Petersburg, at the North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov, specializing in Traumatology and Orthopedics.
This year, I plan to return to my homeland, Angola, and become a practicing trauma surgeon."

In 2014, I began my medical education at Tambov State University with the goal of becoming a doctor. As a first-generation college graduate and doctor, the journey came with its own set of challenges, but Tambov gave me the strong academic and personal foundation I needed to grow.
After graduating, I passed both the Indian Foreign Medical Licensing Exam and the USMLEs. Today, I’m proud to serve as a Postdoctoral research fellow at one of the world’s leading institutions, Yale University, where I work on cutting-edge research in ovarian cancer and placenta accreta. My focus is on advancing women’s health and reproductive rights through science, policy, and advocacy.
For the past two years, I’ve been involved with the WHO Collaborating Centre, contributing toresearch towards improving surgical care delivery in low- and middle-income countries. I also serve on the Global National Surgical Policy group, where I work on efforts to build more equitable surgical systems around the world.
Tambov State University will always hold a special place in my story, for shaping my identity as a doctor and opening doors to opportunities I once only imagined.

My lifelong dream of becoming a doctor began to take shape in 2014, when I moved to Tambov to begin my medical education. What made the experience truly formative were the professors, extraordinary mentors who taught not just medicine, but compassion, discipline, and excellence. Their guidance continues to shape my journey.
I graduated in 2020 with a Red Diploma and a Certificate of Academic Excellence. After returning to India, I passed the national licensing exam and later completed the USMLEs to become an ECFMG-certified doctor.
Along the way, I discovered my true calling in psychiatry. This passion led me to my current role as a Research Assistant in the Department of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine, where I study the impact of ketamine and music on treatment-resistant depression.
I’m also engaged in mental health research through collaborations with NIMHANS Bangalore and State University of New York, where I focus on strengthening child and adolescent mental health systems and exploring the future role of AI in psychiatry. My commitment to global health equity extends to my work with the WHO Collaborating Centre, India & Global National Surgical Policy group, where I contribute to integrating mental health into surgical care pathways in low- and middle-income countries.
Looking ahead, I plan to pursue a psychiatry residency in the U.S., where I hope to bridge research, clinical care, and policy to champion inclusive, equitable mental healthcare.
From Tambov to Yale, it’s been an incredible journey and I remain deeply grateful to Tambov State University for the education and mentorship that set it all in motion.
