The main clinical base of the Department is the 1st and 2nd Surgical Departments of Tambov City Clinical Hospital No. 3 named after I.S. Dolgushin. In addition, the Department's disciplines are taught in medical institutions of the city of Tambov, which are clinical bases of the Medical Institute, including Tambov City Clinical Hospital named after Archbishop Luke, Tambov Regional Clinical Hospital named after V.D. Babenko, Tambov City Clinic No. 5.
A significant part of the classes are conducted directly in the hospital departments. Students learn practical skills at the patient’s bedside during supervision, in dressing rooms, operating rooms, endoscopic rooms and functional and ultrasound diagnostic rooms.
Lectures and practical classes are conducted at a high scientific and methodological level by professors holding advanced degrees and titles, as well as practicing doctors with extensive experience in practical healthcare and surgery.
The Department has a student scientific club called “Faculty Surgery”. The main goal of the science club is to discuss at its meetings the latest methods of treatment and diagnosis of surgical diseases of the abdominal organs, blood vessels and endocrine organs. The main objectives of the club are to develop students’ skills in conducting scientific work, the ability to speak in front of an audience, and consistently express and defend their views. In addition, students participate in scientific and experimental work carried out at the Department, collect statistical material, and survey patients.

The main goal of the educational process at the Department is the formation of professional competencies in diagnosing, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of the most common and socially significant acute and chronic therapeutic diseases at the stage of primary health care, necessary for the professional development of future doctors of various specialties. In addition, an important aspect of the work is preparation of students to undergo the procedures of final state certification and primary accreditation of a specialist, as well as the implementation of a set of measures to adapt students to the specifics and conditions of professional activity in medical organizations of the state healthcare system, which determines practice-oriented nature of the classes for students, including a risk-oriented approach.
It has become a common practice to involve students in volunteer activities as part of preventive measures and information campaigns for the population (Walking with the Doctor project, thematic events, health days, open days in clinics), social assistance to the population in the context of the new coronavirus infection COVID-19 pandemic (as part of the All-Russian mutual assistance campaign “We are Together” in cooperation with the Tambov Regional Branch of the All-Russian Social Organization “Medical Volunteers”).
All this allows us to ensure a combination of traditional methods in the work of the Department with an informal approach to conducting classes, which results in a positive educational effect - the implementation of high-quality, competitive training of specialists aimed at solving problems of any level of complexity when carrying out professional activities in the field of practical healthcare.

The Anatomical Museum of the Medical Institute is an integral part of the general museum complex of Derzhavin University.
Currently, the museum has more than 350 exhibits in all sections of normal human anatomy - osteology, myology, arthrosyndesmology, splanchnology and angioneurology.
The museum's collection includes both anatomical preparations which are made using traditional methods and stored in containers with formalin, and exhibits which are made using the latest technology of polymer embalming.
All bone preparations are made using the osteoclarification method, which allows preserving natural color and hardness of bone tissue. Anatomical preparations were made at the Center for Educational and Medical Technologies at the Military Medical Academy (St. Petersburg).
The polymer embalming technique preserves the natural size, shape and consistency of anatomical structures. It allows you not only to look at the organ, but also to touch it, which significantly increases its didactic value. All drugs are multi-purpose. They can simultaneously demonstrate topographic formations, internal organs, vessels and nerves. The same exhibits can be used to teach different class topics and even sections of the Human Anatomy course. It should be noted that 70% of drugs are multidisciplinary. They can serve as visual aids for classes at the departments of anatomy and physiology, operative surgery and specialized clinical departments.
The pride of the anatomical collection is three total life-size preparations of the human body including two angioneurological and one myological. Among the exhibited samples is a fairly representative selection of various types of pathologies of the human body, both congenital and caused by diseases.
Anatomical collections are actively used in the educational process for teaching Human Anatomy, Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy in such program as General Medicine, Pediatrics, and Dentistry.
The museum is interested in active cooperation with various research organizations, universities, educational and methodological centers, and other organizations.
