Students from the G. R. Derzhavin Tambov State University took part in the memorial patriotic event "Garden of Memory," which was initiated by the Russian House in Grodno.
Tree saplings were planted on the grounds of the Church of All Saints in memory of the heroism of front-line soldiers and home front workers during the World War II. Participants included diplomats from the Russian Consulate General in Grodno, Belarusian public figures, students, and clergy.
"The Russian House in Grodno launched the relay race of the international "Garden of Memory" project in Belarus. This event marked the beginning of the planting of memorial alleys across the country, uniting people in their desire to preserve the truth about the heroism of their ancestors," noted Yulia Semenchenko, director of the Russian House in Grodno. "The 25 lilac saplings are not just trees, but living symbols of gratitude and sorrow, a reminder of each of the 27 million who fell during the World War II."
The Lilac Garden is the third location of the event in the cultural capital of Belarus. Previously, memorial alleys were planted in Kolozhsky Park and at Grodno School No. 15, which bears the name of Major General Dmitry Karbyshev.
"Belarus suffered greatly during the Great Patriotic War. It was here that bloody battles took place, the legendary defense of the Brest Fortress took place, squadron commander Nikolai Gastello carried out his immortal 'fiery ram,' General Dmitry Karbyshev was encircled and tortured to death in Nazi captivity, and the burned village of Khatyn became a symbol of the tragedy of the Belarusian people," explains Ksenia Malmalaeva, a student at Derzhavin University. The "Garden of Memory" campaign brought together people of different generations. The young trees we planted on the grounds of the church complex in Grodno symbolize the eternal memory of the fallen heroes and the immortality of their heroism.
The international "Garden of Memory" campaign has been running since 2020. The project is supported by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who planted a memorial tree on the grounds of the Rzhev Memorial.
