Students from the Derzhavin Engineering and Technical Institute took second place in the finals of the All-Russian competition "Natural Sciences Tournament." This is a team intellectual competition aimed at solving scientific problems in chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics. It was held in Yekaterinburg as part of the International Youth Movement "Eurasian Economic Forum" (EEF). The Ural State University of Economics served as the host.
Derzhavin University was represented at the competition by Dmitry Gusev, Anastasia Dorokhova, Maxim Krasnoperov, Anna Sergeeva, and Sofia Tatarko. At the forum, they solved challenging problems in physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics.
The tournament included several stages. In the qualifying round, our students presented an essay on the topic: "Scientific Developments That Will Change the World." The Derzhavin team achieved an absolute victory, scoring the highest number of points among all the competition participants. In the final round, they defended their solutions in an open debate with their opponents and answered questions from the jury.
"In the qualifying round, we wrote an essay about cutting-edge technologies in Russia—described a unique technology for ion-selective purification of liquid radioactive waste at nuclear power plants. Then, we received five problems from the organizers to find solutions. The problems seemed simple, but in reality, they required knowledge of history, physics, and chemistry," says team captain Dmitry Gusev, a first-year student majoring in Infocommunication Technologies and Communication Systems. "During the tournament itself, roles within the teams were assigned randomly: some were assigned to be the presenter, others the opponent, journalist, or reviewer. It was challenging, but incredibly interesting: you're evaluated not only by experts, but also by your rival teams. We took second place, and our main achievement is proving that we're a real team, where everyone demonstrated expertise in their professional field." We'll definitely be back next year!
The Natural Sciences Tournament is a student team-based creative competition that develops skills in solving applied and theoretical problems and fosters scientific discussion skills. The tournament provides a unique opportunity for students to apply their fundamental knowledge in physics, chemistry, and biology to solving practical problems.
