For the first time in its history, Derzhavin University became a venue for a foreign government election: a polling station for students from Algeria was set up at the university for elections to the National People's Assembly (the lower house of parliament).
Currently, 265 students from Algeria are studying at the university. They voted early; the main elections took place on July 2.
"Since, after St. Petersburg and Kazan, we have the largest number of students from that country studying in Tambov, we were delighted to respond to the embassy's request to organize a polling station. It is a great honor that it is headed by the embassy's second-in-command, Minister Plenipotentiary Brahim Benabi," said University Rector Pavel Moiseev.
According to the rector, cooperation with Algeria is one of Derzhavin University's priorities for developing educational and academic ties on the African continent.
Derzhavin University is actively promoting itself as an internationally oriented university in Central Russia. Its relations with universities in Algeria are among the most advanced. In May 2026, a representative delegation from the University of Constantine III – Salah Bubnider (Constantine) visited Tambov.
Derzhavin University also collaborates with the University of May 8, 1945 in Guelma. Much attention in this bilateral cooperation is paid to promoting the Russian language and culture, as well as academic exchange.
Also in June, the establishment of Russia's first public diplomacy department was announced at the university. One of its objectives will be to train specialists in international relations for government and business.
