G. R. Derzhavin Tambov State University is hosting the All-Russian Research and Practical Conference ‘Evidence-Based Methods of Psychological Counselling, Psychological Intervention and Psychotherapy’. The event marks 30 years of psychology education at the University.
The conference is organised by Derzhavin University's Institute of Medicine and Health Sciences and Department of Clinical Psychology.
More than 100 specialists are taking part, including practising psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists, neuropsychologists, special education specialists, clinical supervisors, university lecturers and researchers from Tambov, Moscow, St Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Voronezh, Rostov-on-Don, Barnaul, Kursk and other Russian cities.
‘The conference is centred on a scientific dialogue about evidence-based methods of psychological support. Together with our colleagues, we are discussing established approaches and promising new methods in psychological counselling, psychological intervention and psychotherapy, assessing how well they are supported by research and how effective they are in practice,’ said Nikolai Denisov, Director of the Institute of Medicine and Health Sciences and PhD in Economics. ‘Two strategic objectives are especially important here. The first is to examine the scientific legacy and contemporary evidence-based approaches in psychology. The second is to promote scientifically validated psychological support practices, improve public health and enhance people's psychological well-being. To pursue these goals, we have brought together Russian universities and partner centres from cities across the country. It is also significant that the conference marks 30 years of psychology education at Derzhavin University. During this time, a strong research tradition has developed in the region, while graduates of our Department of Clinical Psychology have gone on to work in healthcare, education, social services and law enforcement agencies.’
At the plenary session, specialists presented papers on trends in applied psychology, approaches to self-injurious behaviour among adolescents in inpatient settings, the place of neuropsychology in contemporary neuroscience and other topical issues.
‘The conference programme is designed to bring fundamental research together with real-world practice. This format allows participants to identify and share approaches that genuinely work and are supported by scientific evidence. It is also right that the programme covers all key settings, from education and healthcare to private practice and clinical supervision,’ said Evgeny Uvarov, Head of the Department of Clinical Psychology at Derzhavin University, Doctor of Education and Professor. ‘In my presentation, I discussed how applied psychology is changing today and how these changes are reflected in the rhizomatic therapeutic model, an approach that allows practitioners to work flexibly with clients and find solutions in complex and ambiguous situations.’
Five conference sections are taking place across the University's venues: ‘Psychological Counselling in Secondary Vocational and Higher Education’; ‘Evidence-Based Counselling and Psychotherapy in Healthcare’; ‘Contemporary Approaches to Neuropsychological Rehabilitation’; ‘Evidence-Based Counselling and Psychotherapy in Private Practice’; and ‘Supervision, Professional Development and the Prevention of Practitioner Burnout’.
Papers are being presented by specialists from leading Russian research and medical centres, including the Federal Centre for Brain Research and Neurotechnologies, Moscow Institute of Psychoanalysis, Ural Federal University named after B. N. Yeltsin, the Russian Association for Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy, the Altai Regional Hospital for War Veterans and other organisations.
‘Leading medical and educational institutions in the Tambov Region are among our regular partners in organising academic events of this kind. They include the Tambov Regional Clinical Psychiatric Hospital, Archbishop Luke City Clinical Hospital, St Martha of Tambov Perinatal Centre and the Zabota social care institution,’ said Galina Deryabina, Dean of the Faculty of Health Promotion, Rehabilitation and Active Longevity at Derzhavin University, PhD in Education and Associate Professor. ‘Through our joint efforts, Tambov is increasingly becoming a centre dedicated to a special mission: safeguarding people's psychological health and well-being.’
The conference will conclude with a panel discussion.
