On October 15, Derzhavin University Rector Pavel Moiseev met with Wassim Merchela, a 2022 graduate of the TSU doctoral program in "Differential Equations, Dynamic Systems, and Optimal Control" from Algeria. During the meeting, they discussed prospects for developing academic and scientific cooperation between Derzhavin University and Algerian universities.
Wassim shared his impressions of studying and living in Russia. He noted the high quality of Russian education, which is valued in Algeria, and expressed special gratitude to his supervisor, Derzhavin University Professor Evgeny Zhukovsky, for his knowledge and support.
Wassim is currently an associate professor at the State University of Constantine III (Salah Boubnider) and the State Research University Mustapha Stambouli Mascara in Algeria, where he is responsible for collaboration with educational institutions in the Russian Federation. He actively promotes Russian education and culture in Algeria, maintains academic ties with Derzhavin University, publishes research results in TSU journals, and facilitates the participation of Derzhavin University faculty in academic events held in Algeria.
"Working in higher education in my country, I actively strive to promote the development of academic and cultural ties with Russia," emphasized Wassim Merchela. "I am confident that I can make a significant contribution to strengthening relations between our countries."
Wassim noted that his time studying in Russia was one of the most memorable in his life and that he retains warm memories of Russian traditions, culture, and friends.
"I was fortunate to receive higher education at Derzhavin University. Russian education is prestigious and in demand in Algeria. It gave me everything I needed for a successful academic career," says Wassim. "Since childhood, I was interested in the exact sciences, and when my parents told me and the teachers about the best Russian mathematics school, I set myself the goal of studying in Russia—and I achieved it." I was also fortunate to have professors at Derzhavin University – their lectures and practical classes were unforgettable. It was in Tambov, Russia, that I met my future wife, Sarra Benarab, with whom we completed our postgraduate studies and defended our PhD dissertations in physics and mathematics together. My Russian period was one of the most memorable – I immersed myself in the rich Russian culture, traditions, and cuisine. I admit that I became a bit Russian myself, absorbing both the Russian language and the Russian character.
Rector Pavel Moiseev appreciated Wassim Merchela's significant contribution to strengthening international ties and rewarded him with a certificate of participation in the International University program. This is a Derzhavin University’s project aimed at increasing the academic mobility of educators and researchers.
