Scientists of Derzhavin University have developed a modern composite material with unique, fundamentally new properties.
According to the scientists, for many years zirconium ceramics and its composites have been widely used in a wide variety of practical applications from heat-resistant crucibles to dental crowns and implants, from bearings to body armor. However, products made from zirconium ceramics have two disadvantages. Firstly, they are fragile, they collapse with relatively small deformations. Secondly, they degrade as a result of prolonged exposure to moisture. Scientists of Derzhavin University created samples of nanostructured composite ceramics based on zirconium dioxide, with the addition of aluminum oxide and silicon dioxide, which have, albeit not a large, but still a reserve of plasticity combined with increased resistance to moisture.
