Social and Psychological Adaptation
Social and psychological adaptation of foreign students to new norms of behaviour and interaction with people surrounding, unusual conditions of life and climate is a very important factor for their successful study in Russia. In this connection the University staff implements a comprehensive adaptation program for foreign students. This program is designed to create intercultural atmosphere of interaction between different nationalities and favourable microclimate among the student body.
Intercultural Communication
Right from their first days of life in Tambov foreign students are introduced to the University and the town. Russian students along with the university staff hold trainings on issues of intercultural communication. They discuss features of the Russian etiquette and psychological difficulties of communication in the international environment.
Psychological Counselling
Derzhavin University has established psychological counselling for individuals and groups of foreign students. The counselling is done by the University experts. Special attention is given to the maintenance and regulation of psychic health, issues of human life value and other problems students are interested in.
Migration Legislation
Regular meetings with the migration service staff and law-enforcement authorities of Tambov region are arranged at the University. These activities are aimed to eliminate ignorance of law in the sphere of migration legislation.
International Students Interaction Centre
The essential factor of adaptation of foreign students to the new conditions is their engagement in different types of scientific, educational, cultural, leisure and social activities. In an effort to enhance and optimize teaching, learning and socio-educational processes, the International Students Interaction Centre was established at the University. Its main goal is assistance to foreign students in their socio-cultural integration, self-organization and self-development.
Student Unions
At the University there are international student unions which carry out their activities in such areas as science, art, sport and leisure.
Healthy Lifestyle
Foreign students have great opportunities to lead a healthy lifestyle. For that purpose ski trips, ice skating, fitness classes, swimming and other sports activities are organized for them at the University. Every year the University holds competition in basketball, football, netball, table tennis and cricket. The football team of Derzhavin University foreign students takes an active part in the championship between the universities of Tambov region.
Russian Culture
One of the most important components of foreign student adaptation is their involvement in learning Russian culture. For this purpose, excursions to museums and cultural centres in Tambov and the region are organized. Foreign students regularly go on educational and sightseeing trips to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Volgograd, Ryazan, Tula, Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Vladimir, Suzdal and other cultural and historical centres of Russia. Such trips give them the opportunity to get an insight into Russian history and culture.
